*Books!Books!Books!

"I cannot live without books."
Thomas Jefferson to John Adams, 1815

I have to confess that I am a bibliophile. I own more than 400 books. They are everywhere in my home. I have also belonged to more than a dozen different book clubs, frequently visit the public library and am a pretty good resource for where to buy books. I know that many of you share this passion, so please make this your section too. Share your favorite book, make suggestions, send us club information and other resources. info@spotlightrichmond.com

Promoting literacy

Changing the hearts and minds of young people by getting books to children who might not have them, exposing children to authors and illustrators, giving them an opportunity to develop and share their talents are some of the things we will be featuring on SpotlightRichmond. Please indicate your interest in these programs by sending us an email. info@spotlightrichmond.com

We’ll make sure you are the first to receive these announcements.

Book Clubs

Most local libraries and book stores have active book clubs. Perhaps you would like to start one at work, church, in your neighborhood or with a group of friends.

To list your book club here, please send us an email – info@spotlightrichmond.com

How to Start A Book Club

  1. Have a plan. How many people? What is your focus - intellectual or light discussions? Best-sellers or classics?

  2. Organize the details. Will you meet in your home, take turns in members’ homes, or at a bookstore, church, restaurant? At work during lunchtime? How often will you meet?

  3. Create a reading list of possible titles, but be flexible and accept suggestions from members. Research authors online. Many offer book club guidelines and discussion questions on their books.

  4. Advertise your book club in a variety of ways – on SpotlightRichmond.com – via email, flyers in bookstores or libraries, church bulletins, etc.

  5. When the title is selected – usually at your first meeting – it’s a good time to discuss expectations…from each other and specifically when reading and discussing the book. Are their questions to be answered – viewpoints to be considered – style of writing to be compared?

6. Have fun, read a lot of great books and share your stories with us.

SpotlightRichmond Book Club

Would you be interested in participating in an online book club? We can select a title, exchange ideas, come together when time permits, or at a specific time with a “conference call” and then gather somewhere in town for a final meeting.

Please indicate interest. Suggest a title and format, if you like. info@spotlightrichmond.com

Book Exchange

This is a simple idea. The focus is community building, meeting people, sharing stories of favorite books, but it could also be a fund raising activity. It can be done at church, school, library, neighborhood group, club, or work.

Idea: People bring in books to exchange. They receive a coupon for each book and use that coupon to “purchase” books that others have brought in to exchange. Donations are welcome, so people don’t have to shop if they don’t want to. For those who choose to purchase more than they brought in to exchange (reality for any bibliophile or bargain hunter), books can be purchased for a nominal amount (usually $1.00 for hardcover and .50 for paperbacks and children’s books).

We’re doing this at church and our teens are running everything. Tables will be set-up. People will be asked to put their books on tables by category (signs posted). They will help themselves to coupons – shop – donate for additional titles (jar set-up). Any titles not selected will be donated to a variety of groups in our community.

Have you done this too? Please share your story so others can do the same. Thank you! Message Board
