The Diet Dilemma: Five Popular Fad Diets
By Jennifer D. Holloway
In practically all the magazines and you will find diet ads. There are hundreds, if not, a thousand to choose from. In fact, it is estimated that Americans spend over $30 billion yearly on diet plans, equipment, and supplements. So why are Americans still gaining weight? The answer is simple, fad diets, like the ones mentioned in this article, can’t help you lose or maintain weight safely. Avoid these fad diets at all costs.
•The Fasting Diet: Fasting actually slows your body’s ability to lose weight. When you fast, you body is not getting the fuel it needs- because we get fuel from food. To protect itself, your body will instinctively store fat and burn muscle instead. This process slows you metabolism thus making weight loss harder.
•The Liquid Diet: Although liquid diets can produce short-term weight loss, they fail in a major way because most do not encourage behavior change. Liquid diets can often be too low in calories, which eventually inhibit your body’s ability to shed the weight.
•The High-Fiber, Low-Calorie Diet: Although fiber is an important part of a healthy diet, and can play an important role in shedding those extra pounds, this diet generally encourages the consumption of unusually high levels of fiber, which can cause diarrhea, bloating, and cramping.
•The High-Protein, Low-Carbohydrate Diet: The idea behind this eating plan is that avoiding or limiting the carb intake will cut my calories. And while this diet can be effective in cutting calories, it fails to acknowledge the important role carbohydrates play in providing your body the energy it needs for an active life.
•The Food Specific Diet: Food specific diets are eating plans that require you to eat a specific food designed to encourage weight loss. These types of diets, especially if sustained over a long period of time, can deny your body important nutrients it needs to function properly.
